Oakland-based photographer Paul Schiek was born in Fond du Lac, WI and received a BFA in photography from California College for the Arts, San Francisco, CA in 2005. Schiek’s photographs harness human narratives using the immediacy typically found in snapshot photography. Employing a deliberately specific editing process, Schiek engages with the darker parts of personal interiority through his photographic practice. Schiek is perhaps best known for his mail order, self-published, and handcrafted books that present works by both established and unknown photographers. Schiek has exhibited widely including New Museum, New York, NY, Colette, Paris, France, Tate Modern, London, United Kingdom, Parco Factory, Tokyo, Japan, Galeria Yautepec, Mexico City, Mexico, Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, CA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA, and Berkeley Art Museum, Berkeley, CA.
